BBC football pundit suspended for referring to players' scuffle as 'handbags'
|
Steve “Tommo” Thompson has been suspended by the BBC from his punditry duties after referring to a scuffle between two players as “handbags”.
The 65-year-old, who works as a freelancer, has been laid off for the rest of the year after complaints from listeners about the outdated phrase.
Thompson made the comment on BBC Radio Lincolnshire during Lincoln City’s 1-0 win at Swindon Town on Tuesday in the Sky Bet League One.
Explaining their decision, the BBC said the phrase "handbags" was not in line with their standards

Would be interesting to see who and how many complained about this. Imagine its one complaint by a woman
The BBC make themselves look ridiculous with this sort of stuff and undermine real complaints
ps Who is Steve (Stevo) (Tommo) Thompson?

I really object to paying my license fee now. I don’t think they are speaking for me any more.

Shit bags would have been less offensive to those offended by something that may have offended handbag users ??????

You paying a licence fee for that tv , Chill? IF YOU DONT MIND ME ASKING
The tv licence fee is past its sell by date in my opinion. A slimmed down focused BBC funded out of general taxation is still a good thing in my book. But they greatly need to lift their game.

It used to be the case that the people who would find something like this offensive wouldn't watch football.
It used to wind me up a bit that they started encroaching into our sport to impose their will regarding what is and is not allowed onto us, but now i just find it funny.

I’d like to know who these complaining listeners are and how many actually made contact.
Anyway if the term is outdated could it be replaced with “man bags”?

Its an outdated system which offends some Part of the reason I think it should be financed out of general taxation. I think people accept there are things financed that way that some individually wouldn't pay for themselves given a choice. Like the Royal Family

I wouldn't mind betting the complainer(s) comes from within the BBC staff.

This suggests that the BBC see this as sexist
Which suggests that BBC believe that women only fight in a silly way with handbags which is sexist.
Which suggests the BBC don’t believe men can own handbags ..... which is sexist
Perhaps handbags at dawn has been a saying used by both men and women for decades to describe silly fights?
Or was this all actually to protect the players feelings as they truly believed in their fight and therefore it shouldn’t be belittled.
I’m lost

Don’t forget either that this broadcast could not have attracted many listeners in Lincolnshire, a niche market of folk who live in the land of wolds or dykes.

Language is used to communicate ideas.
In this case, it was a term long in use within it's intended audience to give an idea (to them) what was going on.
I hear that term, given that I've lived with it for so many years, I don't need a photo or a video of the incident - I have all the information I need to generate an image in my own mind. I don't need to "see" the players faces, I don't need to see the arms flailing, I don't even need to know what colour shits the players were wearing.
"Handbags" describes perfectly a frequent event in a football match. It should be mandatory to describe at least one such incident in that manner in every game.
